Reading Homework
Every night your child will be responsible for reading 15-20 minutes. They will bring home either one or two books depending on the length of the books. Everyday at school your child will be responsible for switching out and bringing home their books. If for some reason your child does not bring home new books the following night, you may choose to have them re-read the same book (which is OK!) or may choose to read a book from home or their library book. All of these options are fine! The most important thing is that your child reads EVERY NIGHT! After reading the story, students will need to write a COMPLETE sentence answering the question that is listed on the Homework sheet for that night of Reading.
Spelling Homework
Each week your child will be required to practice READING and learning eight sight words that are located at the top of the Weekly Homework Sheet. Everyday at school students will practice spelling these words. In your child’s binder there is an optional spelling notebook, this is for your student to practice spelling their words at home. If your child can already read the words of the week, it would be a better practice to use the week to SPELL the words, so you would focus on spelling rather than reading. After students have practice spelling them all week in the classroom and the word is up on our word wall, I will look that students are spelling them correctly in their writing. There will be no spelling test, as it is more important that they can spell them correctly in their everyday writing.
Math Homework
Math homework will come home occasionally, always on a Tuesday or Wednesday. It is always labeled “Homework”, says when it is due back, and is a sheet that is sent home. It usually is a continuation of something we are working on in the room, or addition/subtraction practice. Math will not come home for a few weeks until I feel students are in the routine of the Reading and Spelling Homework!
Please do not hesitate to ask if you have questions!
